Paying for our own surveillance

iPhone nSa...

NSA, get it?

It's a life full of ironies.

For decades, we paid - and paid big bucks - for the instruments that propagandized us (your monthly cable bill and your big screen TV.)

Now we're paying ever-increasing costs for ever increasing-levels of surveillance.

At what point does it make sense to start saying "no" to the latest necessary conveniences?

Maybe right about now.

On another topic - and if I had all the time in the world, this idea merits book length treatment - how much has technology really helped us versus the harm it causes?

As Howard Zinn pointed out in our recent series on war, while the benefits of technology are sung from the rooftops non-stop, few calculate the cost of various technologies.

For example...

How much fun is it to master a tool and then a few years, or in just months, later be put in the position of having to learn a whole new set of features and methods?

Does it really help you to have a set of useful skills made obsolete and have to continuously be learning new ones from scratch?

Who has the power in that relationship?

The person or the tool makers?

In a system like this, you never really "own" the tool, the way someone who has a manual skill owns it and can deepen and improve it endlessly over time.

In contrast when your "skill" comes from technology, it can always be interrupted, turned off, taken away, or re-priced in a way that's financially ruinous to you.

Food for thought.
