After a visit to Massachusetts, science writer Californian Kris Newby and her husband were struck down with a debilitating disease. Ten different doctors and thousands of dollars later and none of them had a clue - so they told her if was "all in your head."
At last, she found a competent physician (no easy trick) and was successfully treated. She learned that the tick that bit her had multiple infections - something not normally found in nature.
Then she started researching and discovered that in the 1960s, the US had a bio-warfare program that involved combining multiple illness causing organisms and a single tick and then spreading the ticks around to "see what would happen."
This and other bio-warfare programs was kept as secret as the Manhattan Project which developed the atom bomb.
Now thanks to Ms. Kimby's research new details about these illnesses - along with possible research and treatment paths - are being revealed for the first time.
