Governments invest a lot of money and effort in promoting the idea of their legitimacy.

But what is the real function of governments (including churches?)

To quote the Bible "by your fruits, you shall know them."

So what do governments and churches do when they're not doing well publicized good deeds?

Well, for one thing, they are really interested in control and very often control at any cost.

They're also keenly interested in extracting resources from their citizen, subjects, church members etc.
