Why did Bugliosi change the facts in so many places?

I always felt that Vincent Bugliosi was a front man for the CIA - as so many high profile LA law enforcement people are.
He covered for them with his ridiculous Kennedy assassination book...and I had a hunch also in his prosecution of the Charles Manson case and his book "Helter Skelter."
The "lone mastermind criminal genius story" never made sense. Here's someone who found a circumstantial connection between Manson and one of the creators of the CIA's MK-Ultra.
