Then he learned something profound: His editors wanted him to go only so far. If he strayed and tried to go deeper or broader, he was told to back off.

Really?

People don't want to know what's going on in their world? They'd rather have superficial, disconnected short stories that don't explain anything?

I don't buy it and either does Rappoport.
